Mumbai Metro To Add Two Trains On Lines 2A And 7 As 3 Lakh Ride Daily

Mumbai’s Metro Lines 2A and 7 could soon witness an expansion in capacity, as ridership on these corridors has crossed the three-lakh daily mark. With growing commuter volumes, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) is actively evaluating the deployment of two additional trains to enhance service frequency and reduce congestion during peak hours.

On Thursday, the agency conducted trial runs of two extra trains along the D N Nagar–Dahisar East (Line 2A) and Andheri East–Dahisar East (Line 7) corridors. These test runs aimed to assess the operational feasibility of integrating additional services into the existing timetable. According to transport officials, a final decision on permanent deployment will be taken after a thorough analysis of the trial performance and commuter flow metrics. July 8 marked a new milestone, with over 3.01 lakh passengers using the two metro lines — the highest daily ridership recorded since their launch. The growing demand, particularly during morning and evening office hours, has led to crowded platforms and packed trains, prompting calls from transport planners and commuters alike for improved headways and service expansion.

Currently, the combined network of Lines 2A and 7 operates 284 trips daily using 28 train sets. With the possible addition of two more train sets, this number would rise to 30, enabling the system to increase trip frequency, reduce wait times, and enhance passenger comfort during rush hours. Officials emphasised that any additional services will be carefully calibrated to align with real-time demand, infrastructure capacity, and energy efficiency targets. The move also supports the city’s larger mobility goals by encouraging a shift from private to public transport — a key lever in lowering urban emissions and fostering a more sustainable transit system.

If the pilot proves successful, the two new trains could be inducted into regular operations within days, reinforcing Mumbai Metro’s role in shaping equitable and efficient urban mobility.
