Mumbai Metro Line 7A Set for 2026 Launch

Mumbai’s Metro Line 7A extension is progressing steadily, with the project expected to reach completion by December 2026. Spearheaded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this ambitious infrastructure endeavour is set to transform airport connectivity in the city, establishing a third direct metro link to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Building on the existing Metro Line 7, which connects Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East), Line 7A will extend southwards by 3.423 kilometres. This extension will feature both elevated and underground sections, designed to seamlessly integrate into Mumbai’s bustling urban fabric. Once operational, it will provide a direct route from Andheri (East) to the airport, slashing travel times by up to 60 minutes for passengers. This enhanced connectivity will be further augmented by its integration with Metro Line 3 and the forthcoming Metro Line 8, creating a more efficient and cohesive public transport network across the city.

Despite facing significant engineering challenges, the project has achieved a critical milestone, with over 52 per cent of the construction now complete. The alignment of Line 7A presents unique obstacles, including an elevated section along the Western Express Highway and Sahar Elevated Road, culminating in an elevated station at Airport Colony. The route then transitions underground, with a new station strategically located near Terminal 2, adjacent to the existing Metro Line 3 station.

The construction of the underground section employs a Dual Mode Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), specially designed to navigate Mumbai’s challenging rocky terrain. This TBM, with a cutter head diameter of 6.68 metres and an average excavation rate of four to five metres per day, is pivotal in the creation of the 2.035-kilometre twin tunnels. These tunnels are reinforced with precast ring segments to ensure durability.

Beyond enhancing travel convenience, Metro Line 7A is expected to have substantial environmental benefits. By promoting public transport over private vehicles, the project aims to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, thereby improving air quality in Mumbai. Additionally, the extension is anticipated to bring considerable economic advantages to the city.

The Metro Line 7A project reflects Mumbai’s commitment to advancing urban mobility. As the city continues to grow, such initiatives are crucial for sustaining its leadership in infrastructure development. “This project is vital for enhancing connectivity to a major city gateway and supports Mumbai’s ongoing expansion,” noted MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. The completion of Line 7A will mark a significant advancement in the Mumbai Metro network, offering residents and travellers a more convenient and interconnected transit experience.
