Mumbai Metro Line 5 to Extend Till Ambernath

Mumbai’s escalating commuter crisis, the city’s Metro Line 5 is set to be extended from Kalyan to Ambernath. The decision comes in the wake of the recent Mumbra train tragedy, which underscored the urgent need to decongest the overburdened suburban railway network and improve transit options for residents living beyond Thane.

The extension, which will take the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan Metro Line 5 further east to Chikhloli in Ambernath via Ulhasnagar, is being prioritised by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The upgraded corridor is expected to serve densely populated regions like Ambernath, Badlapur and Ulhasnagar—areas that currently rely almost entirely on overcrowded local trains and road networks.

This move was formalised after a high-level meeting between elected representatives and senior MMRDA officials, who unanimously agreed that the Metro should offer a viable alternative to lakhs of daily suburban train users. The planned alignment will run along the Kalyan–Badlapur Road, with an integrated transport hub at Chikhloli, where metro and suburban railway services will converge—creating seamless multimodal connectivity for commuters.

Officials have now been instructed to fast-track the preparation of the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension. The aim is to align the new section with the ongoing construction timeline of Metro Line 5 to avoid delays and maximise utility for outer-suburban residents.

This infrastructure intervention is being seen as a direct response to mounting public pressure following the Mumbra rail mishap that killed four and injured several others. It sparked a renewed debate on the safety and capacity of Mumbai’s legacy transit systems, particularly on the Central Railway line, which remains chronically overburdened.

Urban planners and mobility experts have welcomed the decision, calling it a strategic long-term solution that complements broader goals of sustainable urban development. By shifting commuter volume from road and diesel-powered trains to clean-energy metro systems, the extension is poised to cut fuel consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and offer faster, safer, and more inclusive travel.

The extension also coincides with renewed emphasis on complementary regional infrastructure projects. These include the Kalyan Ring Road, which proposes a two-level corridor at Nevali with a metro viaduct atop a flyover, and the U-shaped road redesign in East Kalyan, which aims to improve traffic movement and pedestrian safety. A flyover across the Waldhuni River from Palm Resort to Vithalwadi is also on the drawing board.

In parallel, stakeholders reviewed the status of the long-pending Navi Mumbai–Badlapur access-controlled corridor—a key east-west connector that, once operational, will ease pressure on both roadways and railways.

The MMRDA’s metro extension plan not only reflects an infrastructural response to a tragic event, but also serves as a blueprint for future-ready transport planning across Mumbai’s rapidly expanding urban periphery. If executed on schedule, the Ambernath extension could significantly rebalance the region’s commuter dynamics, bringing metro-grade efficiency and reliability to a wider cross-section of the population.
