The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the extension of Metro Line 5 from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic Mumbra train accident, which underscored the urgent need to alleviate congestion on Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
The extended Metro Line 5 will cover an additional 7.7 km, connecting Kalyan to Ulhasnagar in two phases. The first phase will extend from Kalyan to Khadakpada, and the second phase will connect Khadakpada to Ulhasnagar. This extension aims to provide a seamless and efficient mode of transport for residents of Ulhasnagar, Badlapur, and surrounding areas, reducing their reliance on overcrowded local trains. A key feature of the extension is the development of an integrated transport hub at Chikhloli, which will facilitate easy interchange between Metro and suburban railway services. This hub is expected to streamline commuter flow and improve overall transit efficiency in the region.
The MMRDA has been directed to expedite the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension, with a target completion timeframe of six months. The project is part of a broader initiative to enhance infrastructure in the Kalyan-Dombivli region, including the development of the Kalyan Ring Road and other key transportation projects. The extension of Metro Line 5 is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Ulhasnagar and Mumbai, reducing travel time and providing a safer and more comfortable commuting option for residents. The project is also anticipated to stimulate economic growth in the region by improving access to employment centers and commercial hubs.
As work progresses, commuters are advised to stay informed about developments and any potential impacts on travel. The MMRDA is committed to ensuring the timely and efficient implementation of this project to meet the growing transportation needs of the region. The extension of Metro Line 5 to Ulhasnagar marks a significant step towards modernizing Mumbai’s suburban transport infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents.
