Mumbai Metro Line 4 trial Runs Set to Begin in September

Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line 4 has entered a crucial stage, with trial train coaches being placed on the tracks near Anand Nagar in Thane over the weekend. Officials confirmed that system trials on the 32-km corridor, which connects Wadala to Kasarvadavali, will commence in September. The development marks a visible shift in progress for one of the most ambitious urban transit projects linking Mumbai with Thane.

Metro Line 4, also known as the Yellow Line, is expected to significantly transform travel between the eastern suburbs and Thane. Designed as a critical urban mobility spine, the line will decongest arterial roads currently struggling with high traffic volumes, while also reducing vehicular emissions. Officials said the coaches now stationed in Thane will be used for rigorous system and track tests before the final rolling stock is inducted. The corridor will not only enhance daily commute efficiency but will also serve as a sustainable alternative for millions of passengers. “Metro Line 4 is being built to provide last-mile connectivity, boost regional accessibility, and offer a modern, low-carbon mode of public transport to commuters,” an official associated with the project said.

The rolling stock contract was awarded earlier this year to a consortium of engineering majors, ensuring global-standard technology in operations. The coaches placed on site mirror the final specifications of trains that will eventually run on the Yellow Line. Using heavy cranes, they were mounted on the girders at Anand Nagar in a night-long operation, indicating the scale of coordination required for the project. Officials added that the Thane internal metro line, now under development, will include interchanges with Metro Line 4. This will create seamless connectivity for commuters in Thane and adjoining areas, addressing one of the biggest gaps in the suburban transport network. The integration is expected to support the city’s vision of building inclusive, equitable, and eco-friendly transport systems.

Partial commissioning is also on the cards. The first operational stretch, measuring around 10.5 km between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction, is targeted for inauguration in early 2026. This phase will cover 10 stations, offering immediate relief to commuters in Thane. Experts emphasise that the Yellow Line is not only a transport project but a socio-economic catalyst. By reducing travel time between Mumbai and Thane, the corridor is expected to encourage housing, business, and cultural development along its route. More importantly, its sustainable design underscores the city’s commitment to lowering its carbon footprint and transitioning towards greener public infrastructure.

For now, with trial runs set to begin in September, the city awaits a modern metro link that promises cleaner air, faster journeys, and a step closer to a sustainable urban future.
