Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2B Awaits CMRS Approval For Launch

Mumbai is set to further enhance its urban transit network as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) moves closer to launching Phase 2B of Metro Line 3. This underground corridor will connect Worli to Cuffe Parade, offering commuters a faster and more efficient alternative along one of the city’s busiest stretches. The operational launch, however, hinges on clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), the authority responsible for validating passenger safety systems.

Officials confirmed that a CMRS inspection team recently reviewed critical infrastructure across the stretch, including track alignment, signalling systems, power supply, and emergency response mechanisms. The inspection was part of a preparatory evaluation before the final certification, signalling that the metro line’s operational readiness is nearing completion. Trial runs on Phase 2B have already been conducted successfully, indicating that all systems are functioning as intended.

Phase 2B forms a crucial extension of the 33.5-kilometre Metro Line 3, which currently runs from Cuffe Parade to Aarey in phased sections. Earlier phases, including Aarey to BKC and BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, have already reduced traffic congestion in key commercial corridors. The upcoming extension promises similar benefits by connecting South Mumbai’s commercial hubs with residential and business districts, potentially saving commuters significant travel time.Beyond easing road congestion, Phase 2B is expected to offer a safe, comfortable, and environmentally sustainable commuting option.

The underground corridor reduces the city’s carbon footprint by encouraging public transport adoption, aligning with Mumbai’s broader goals of creating a sustainable and equitable urban transport ecosystem.Once CMRS approval is granted, thousands of daily commuters are anticipated to benefit from reduced journey times and improved connectivity. MMRCL officials emphasise that passenger safety remains paramount, with comprehensive protocols in place to ensure a reliable and secure transit experience. The phased development of Metro Line 3 highlights Mumbai’s ongoing commitment to modernising urban mobility, leveraging technological upgrades, and integrating sustainability into public infrastructure planning. As the city’s population continues to grow, projects like Metro Line 3 Phase 2B are vital to enhancing transport efficiency while supporting zero-carbon and eco-friendly city initiatives.
