Daily commuters travelling between Mumbai’s northern suburbs and central business districts have reason to celebrate, as the newly operational Metro Line 3—dubbed the Aqualine—now connects Aarey to Dadar in just 26 minutes. This announcement from Mumbai Metro’s official handle has caught the attention of citizens eager to bypass the city’s worsening surface traffic.
Mumbai Metro Line 3, the city’s first fully underground corridor, is being hailed as a game-changer for public transport. The stretch linking Aarey to Dadar traverses several high-density zones via a series of strategically located stations, offering seamless north-south connectivity. This new underground system not only slashes travel time significantly but also offers a more sustainable alternative to road transport, in alignment with Mumbai’s broader climate goals and zero-carbon commitments. Officials involved in the project shared that the Aqualine is designed to alleviate peak-hour congestion, especially in locations like Worli, Mahalaxmi, and Dadar, which are critical for both business and residential transit. However, this major infrastructural feat also faced a setback recently. The contractor responsible for the Acharya Atre Chowk underground station in Worli was fined ₹10 lakh after the station witnessed significant waterlogging during a heavy downpour on May 26, 2025. Investigations confirmed that an improperly installed fire barrier system allowed rainwater to infiltrate the newly commissioned station, disrupting operations and damaging finishes across multiple levels. Senior officials overseeing the Metro project have confirmed that the lapses were due to operational negligence and substandard planning. The penalty, imposed after a formal inquiry, underlines the city’s push for higher accountability in urban infrastructure projects. According to them, penalties like these are necessary to ensure that construction agencies meet safety standards, particularly when it comes to critical public transport networks.
