Mumbai Metro Line 2B To Open This Year

Mumbai’s long-awaited Metro Line 2B, a crucial east–west corridor connecting D.N. Nagar to Mandale, is nearing operational readiness, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban mobility expansion. The elevated 23.6-kilometre line, which will feature 20 stations, is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹10,986 crore. The first phase—linking Mandale to Chembur—is expected to be commissioned later this year, according to officials.

The project forms part of Mumbai’s broader metro network, designed to connect the city’s eastern and western suburbs through seamless interchanges. Metro Line 2B will integrate with several other key corridors, including Lines 2A, 3, 4, and 7, as well as the Monorail and both the Western and Eastern Express Highways. Once fully operational, the line will significantly reduce road congestion, improve travel reliability, and enhance accessibility for millions of daily commuters. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the new corridor is central to the city’s vision of creating a multimodal transport ecosystem. “The line will help decongest major routes and provide last-mile connectivity to residential, commercial, and industrial zones across both sides of the city,” an official stated.

Urban mobility experts view the project as a vital step toward sustainable city travel. With Mumbai’s population density among the highest in the world, a high-capacity transit system is seen as critical for reducing emissions and improving air quality. “Expanding the metro network not only shortens travel time but also shifts commuters from private vehicles to public transport, which has direct climate benefits,” a transport planner said. Line 2B is also expected to complement the city’s digital integration push through the Mumbai One app, which already allows commuters to plan and pay for multi-modal trips. Once the corridor is live, passengers will be able to switch between metro lines and other modes using a unified payment and ticketing interface—bringing Mumbai closer to a fully integrated urban transit system.

As Mumbai’s metro network continues to expand—with more than 300 kilometres of lines under construction or in planning—the focus is increasingly on sustainable growth. The upcoming Line 2B not only promises faster and safer commuting but also supports the city’s long-term goals of building a low-carbon, accessible, and equitable transport future for all citizens.
