Mumbai Metro Line 2B Set To Connect Eastern And Western Suburbs By October End

Mumbai’s Metro Line 2B is set to mark a defining moment in the city’s public transport evolution, as it prepares to become the first metro corridor to connect the eastern and western suburbs directly. Designed to link Mandalay in the east with DN Nagar in the west, the line promises to significantly cut travel time, ease traffic congestion, and redefine suburban mobility for millions of daily commuters.

According to metro officials, the first phase of the 2B corridor — stretching from Mandalay to Diamond Garden in Chembur — is fully complete and undergoing final safety checks and operational trials. The line, which had earlier faced delays due to pending certifications, is now expected to be inaugurated by the end of October. Sources indicate that the formal launch could happen around October 30 or 31, once the statutory safety clearances are secured. The 5-kilometre-long initial section includes five stations — Mandalay, Mankhurd, BSNL Metro, Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, and Diamond Garden — marking the metro’s debut in the eastern suburbs. This phase is expected to serve thousands of commuters daily, offering a faster and more reliable travel alternative compared to road transport.

Once fully operational, Metro Line 2B will feature 20 elevated stations connecting Esik Nagar, Bandra, Kurla East, Chembur, and several high-density residential and commercial hubs. The route will integrate with multiple metro corridors, including Line 2A (Dahisar–Andheri), Line 3 (Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ), Line 4 (Wadala–Thane), and Line 4A, enabling uninterrupted travel across Mumbai’s expanding urban network. Urban transport experts highlight that Metro 2B’s east–west linkage will be a transformative step toward reducing the city’s overdependence on local trains and private vehicles. By offering a cleaner, electric-powered transport option, the project contributes directly to Mumbai’s carbon reduction targets and supports the creation of an integrated, low-emission mobility ecosystem.

Additionally, the corridor will connect with the Chembur Monorail, the CSMT–Panvel railway line, and the upcoming Mumbai–Navi Mumbai Airport Fast Corridor. These interlinks are expected to smoothen last-mile connectivity, especially for office-goers and airport-bound travellers. The line’s alignment through Bandra — a major interchange point — will enhance access to the city’s financial districts and employment hubs. As the city awaits the final safety approval, anticipation is high among commuters. Officials maintain that the line will not only enhance convenience but also contribute to cleaner air and reduced road congestion. Metro Line 2B, once operational, will symbolise Mumbai’s broader transition towards sustainable, equitable, and future-ready urban transport infrastructure.
