Mumbai Metro Line 2B Reaches Key Milestone

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully energised a 5.6-kilometre stretch of Metro Line 2B, running between Mandale and Diamond Garden.

This development, which took place on April 8, 2025, marks a key moment in the gradual roll-out of the city’s much-anticipated 23.6-kilometre elevated metro corridor. The energisation of this section, an essential phase in the project, brings the city closer to improving its public transport infrastructure, easing the daily commute for millions of Mumbaikars.

MMRDA officials confirmed that the power supply, delivered via the overhead equipment (OHE) system, is operating at the required 25kV alternating current capacity, in line with the specifications of Mumbai’s metro network. This energisation follows the successful installation of power infrastructure at Mandale Depot, where the initial metro trainset is already undergoing internal evaluation. The testing phase is expected to ensure that the entire system runs seamlessly when fully operational.

Despite facing multiple delays, the MMRDA has adopted a phased approach to the project, now launching the Mandale-Diamond Garden segment ahead of schedule. The move is part of a strategy designed to fast-track the completion of Metro Line 2B, which is slated for full service by the end of 2025. This approach allows the MMRDA to streamline both construction and testing processes, with the aim of integrating the line into Mumbai’s transport system in stages.

The Mandale Depot, strategically located in Mankhurd, will play a crucial role in maintaining Metro Line 2B’s operations. Spanning 31.4 hectares of government-owned land, the depot has been designed with a double-decker layout, maximising its capacity to house up to 72 trainsets. The depot’s infrastructure is integral to supporting the metro system’s continued expansion, ensuring that the trains are maintained and serviced as part of a robust operational model.

Metro Line 2B is a vital link in Mumbai’s metro network, connecting D N Nagar in the west to Mandale in the east, cutting through some of the city’s most congested and densely populated neighbourhoods, including Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur. The line is expected to serve over one million passengers daily and significantly alleviate the traffic congestion that plagues Mumbai’s roadways. The completion of Metro Line 2B is expected to offer a faster, more efficient alternative to existing transport systems, improving quality of life for residents while contributing to reduced carbon emissions by shifting more commuters to public transit.

The phased rollout is not just about enhancing transit efficiency; it also aligns with Mumbai’s broader sustainability goals. With the city’s population growing and the environmental cost of road traffic rising, the metro expansion offers a much-needed solution to tackle both congestion and pollution. The phased implementation ensures that essential segments like Mandale-Diamond Garden are operational early, providing immediate benefits for commuters while allowing more time for the completion of the remaining stretches.

The adoption of this phased execution model highlights MMRDA’s commitment to adapting to the challenges of Mumbai’s urban landscape. The authority is focused on delivering functional infrastructure while overcoming the obstacles that often hinder large-scale urban transit projects, such as land acquisition issues and regulatory approvals.

As the city moves closer to completing Metro Line 2B, the initiative promises to be a game-changer in Mumbai’s transit landscape. Not only will it offer millions of Mumbaikars a more reliable and eco-friendly means of transport, but it will also help shape the city’s journey toward a sustainable and more liveable future. With the rollout of each new stretch, Mumbai inches closer to reducing its traffic woes and making its public transport system a model for other megacities to follow.
