Mumbai Metro Line 14 to Connect Badlapur and Kanjurmarg

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is poised to initiate the development of Mumbai Metro Line 14, a transformative infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Badlapur and Kanjurmarg.

This ambitious 38-kilometre corridor is set to become the longest metro line in India, traversing key suburban areas and offering a much-needed alternative to the existing overburdened local train services. The proposed Metro Line 14 will span from Badlapur in the eastern suburbs to Kanjurmarg in the central region of Mumbai. The route is designed to pass through significant locales including Ambernath, Nilje, Shil Phata, Mahape, and Ghansoli, before crossing the Thane Creek to reach Kanjurmarg. This strategic alignment aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a reliable mode of transportation for the lakhs of commuters who currently rely on the limited suburban railway services.

In line with contemporary infrastructure development practices, MMRDA has proposed executing Metro Line 14 through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach is anticipated to leverage private sector efficiency and investment, ensuring timely completion and operational excellence. The detailed project report (DPR) for the project has been reviewed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B), with recommendations aligning with the PPP framework. Additionally, experts from Milan Metro in Spain have endorsed this model, citing its success in similar urban transit projects globally. Construction of Metro Line 14 is slated to commence by 2026, with an anticipated completion date of 2031. Upon operationalisation, the line is expected to handle a daily ridership of approximately 6.5 lakh passengers, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing the overall commuting experience. The introduction of this metro line is projected to decrease local train overcrowding and provide a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to road transport, contributing to the city’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility.

The development of Mumbai Metro Line 14 represents a significant step towards modernising the city’s public transportation infrastructure. By connecting key suburban areas and integrating them into the broader metro network, this project promises to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a reliable and sustainable mode of transport for Mumbai’s residents. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to ensure that environmental considerations, land acquisition processes, and community engagement are effectively managed to realise the full potential of this transformative initiative.
