Mumbai Metro Line 12 to Transform Kalyan Taloja Airport Connectivity

Mumbai’s urban mobility landscape is poised for a significant overhaul with the development of Metro Line 12, a 22.17 km fully elevated corridor designed to connect Kalyan to Taloja while offering seamless integration with the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) via the existing Navi Mumbai Metro network. Construction commenced in March 2024, and officials anticipate full operationalisation by December 2027.

Positioned as an extension of the Orange Line and Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan), Line 12 will comprise 19 strategically located stations. The corridor starts at APMC Kalyan and terminates at Amandoot (Taloja), which will function as an interchange with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, enhancing multi-modal connectivity across the metropolitan region. The project, budgeted at ₹5,865 crore—including escalation and taxes—has been awarded under an EPC contract to a consortium led by Gawar Constructions, whose bid amounted to approximately ₹2,037 crore. Early construction phases are already underway, with 5–20% of structural elements, including piers and piles, completed.

Key stations along the corridor include APMC Kalyan, Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavali Gaon, Golavali, Dombivli MIDC, Sagaon, Sonarpada, Manpada (Dombivli East), Hedutane (future Line 14), Kolegaon, Nilaje Gaon, Vadavali, Bale, Waklan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve, and Amandoot (Taloja). Experts project that Metro Line 12 will initially carry between 2.5 and 2.6 lakh passengers daily by 2031, increasing to three lakh by 2041. Services are expected to operate with six-coach trains shared with Line 5, running from 6 AM to 10 PM, with peak-hour frequencies of 5–7 minutes.

Travel time between Kalyan and Taloja, which currently takes 1 to 1.5 hours by road, is expected to be reduced to approximately 45 minutes. Officials highlight that this improvement will not only alleviate chronic road congestion but also stimulate regional growth and facilitate smoother commuting between Kalyan-Dombivli, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Amandoot station will provide indirect access to NMIA, while planned integration with Metro Line 8 (Gold Line) could deliver a direct connection between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and NMIA, enhancing airport accessibility for commuters from central suburbs.

Urban transport experts note that Line 12 represents a critical component in Mumbai’s sustainable transit strategy, promoting zero-emission mobility, equitable access, and a more eco-friendly urban environment. The project also aligns with broader metropolitan plans to reduce vehicular dependency, improve public transport efficiency, and foster long-term urban resilience.
