Mumbai’s oldest metro corridor, Line 1, is undergoing a transformative communication overhaul as authorities begin deploying the MCX ONE system to replace the ageing TETRA radio infrastructure. The move, aimed at ensuring mission-critical communication capabilities, marks a significant step in the city’s broader push towards next-generation, resilient urban transport.

Launched in June 2014, the 11.4-kilometre elevated corridor that connects Versova to Ghatkopar has become a core pillar of Mumbai’s mass transit ecosystem. With 12 stations strategically positioned for interchange with the suburban railway at Andheri and Ghatkopar, the line today serves over five lakh commuters daily. That number is projected to touch eight lakh by 2031, further underscoring the need for a robust communication backbone. Metro One Operation Pvt Ltd (MOOPL), which operates Line 1, has decided to retire the nearly two-decade-old TETRA system in favour of MCX ONE, a broadband-based communication solution built for high-reliability scenarios. The system will be deployed by Consort Digital with systems integration from DAMM India. Notably, the upgrade has been designed for implementation without disrupting existing daily operations—an imperative for the city’s consistently high transit demand.

The MCX ONE suite includes the Core Enterprise platform, Dispatch Centre, InterWorking Gateway, and Rail Integration Server, all integrated into existing Motorola end-user devices. These components will interface seamlessly with advanced DAMM TetraFlex base stations, delivering a layered yet scalable communication solution. Officials from the operations team have indicated that this change is critical to supporting the growing complexity of metro management, including emergency response, real-time passenger updates, and command centre coordination. Communication experts familiar with the project describe this deployment as a milestone in India’s transition to LTE-based broadband public safety systems. With the MCX standard now recognised globally for enabling data-rich and real-time audio-visual transmission, the system represents a future-ready solution for urban rail networks facing exponential demand growth.

For Mumbai, which is actively investing in metro expansions across multiple corridors, this technological leap has implications beyond Line 1. Authorities are already exploring ways to extend similar upgrades across new metro lines currently under construction. By doing so, the city aims to embed standardised and scalable communication protocols across its multimodal transport grid. From a sustainability perspective, upgrading communication infrastructure on high-volume lines such as this reduces systemic risk, prevents delays, and keeps urban travel efficient—critical elements in reducing the city’s dependence on personal vehicles. Metro experts point out that improved reliability also encourages higher ridership, leading to long-term gains in reducing emissions, congestion, and urban sprawl.

One of the most compelling aspects of the MCX ONE upgrade is its focus on operational continuity. Unlike conventional overhauls, which often require partial shutdowns or phased cutovers, this rollout has been engineered to be non-disruptive.
