Mumbai Metro extends midnight services, adds 12 trips for Ganeshotsav

Mumbai is preparing for the annual Ganeshotsav, one of the city’s most significant cultural celebrations, with transport authorities stepping in to manage the expected surge in passenger movement. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that Metro services will run until midnight with 12 additional trips every day between 27 August and 6 September, offering commuters a safer and faster alternative during the festive period.

Officials confirmed that this decision was driven by the need to accommodate the extraordinary increase in footfalls as millions of devotees are expected to travel across the city to visit Ganesh pandals. The extension applies to Metro Lines 2A (Yellow) and 7 (Red), covering the crucial Andheri-Gundavali corridor. The last trains will now depart from both terminals at midnight instead of the standard 11 PM closure.

With this, daily weekday operations will expand from 305 to 317 services. Authorities also stated that trains would continue to run at intervals of five minutes and fifty seconds during peak hours, while non-peak frequency would remain close to nine minutes. On weekends, services will also be scaled up, with 256 trips scheduled on Saturdays and 229 on Sundays, ensuring commuters across the city have consistent access throughout the festive season. Officials added that more services may be introduced on specific days depending on crowd behaviour.
Transport planners underline that this expansion is not merely a festival measure but part of a broader strategy to encourage sustainable mobility. By strengthening the Metro network during high-demand occasions, authorities hope to reduce the burden on road traffic, curb vehicular emissions, and provide a greener alternative to private vehicles and taxis. This is in line with Mumbai’s long-term vision of transitioning towards an integrated, low-carbon public transport ecosystem.

The move is complemented by Pune Metro, which will also extend its operational hours for Ganeshotsav. Pune Metro will run trains until 2 AM between 30 August and 5 September and has planned a non-stop 41-hour service during Anant Chaturdashi, when the immersion processions traditionally draw massive crowds.Experts believe that these steps reflect an evolving approach to urban mobility in Indian cities, where festivals and public gatherings play a central role in planning. For Mumbai and Pune, aligning public transport capacity with cultural calendars is increasingly being recognised as essential to building equitable, climate-conscious, and citizen-friendly cities. While challenges of congestion, safety, and last-mile connectivity remain, extended Metro services during Ganeshotsav demonstrate a vital shift towards prioritising commuter well-being and environmental sustainability in urban transport policy.
