Mumbai Metro One has achieved a significant milestone, recording a ridership of 500,385 commuters in a single day on August 13, 2024. This is the first time the metro line has surpassed the 500,000 mark under normal operational conditions, marking a notable achievement for the Versova-Ghatkopar corridor.
Prior to this record, weekday ridership for Mumbai Metro One in 2023 ranged from 400,000 to 450,000. By July 2024, this number had risen to between 450,000 and 460,000. However, since August 2024, daily ridership figures have surged, with August 13 reaching the unprecedented figure of 500,000. A spokesperson for Mumbai Metro One expressed elation at this new record, attributing it to enhanced customer experience and operational efficiency.
“We are thrilled to have achieved this milestone, reflecting the strong support from Mumbaikars who rely on us as a critical part of their daily commute. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to providing a world-class service,” the spokesperson said. The rise in ridership is attributed to a combination of strategic sales and marketing initiatives. These include loyalty programs, corporate and society contact programs, retailer collaborations, and the promotion of digital payments. Such measures have significantly contributed to the increase in daily passengers.
Mumbai Metro One currently operates 430 trips daily, with a frequency of approximately 3.5 minutes during peak hours and 7 minutes during off-peak periods. This operational schedule has been crucial in accommodating the growing number of passengers. In 2019, the metro line saw a similar spike in ridership during a nine-day strike by BEST buses, but the recent figures reflect a consistent and robust increase in commuter numbers without the influence of external factors. The current ridership surge highlights the metro’s growing role as a lifeline in Mumbai’s extensive public transport network.
