Mumbai’s metro network is preparing to introduce a 25 per cent fare concession for persons with disabilities (PwDs), marking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible public transport system. The discounted fares are expected to take effect from 23 November, following the completion of technical integration across the system’s ticketing infrastructure.
According to officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, the concession has been undergoing its final phase of testing to ensure seamless application across ticketing channels. This includes integration with automatic fare collection gates, digital ticketing platforms, and station-level systems. “The technical teams are working to ensure error-free implementation so that eligible commuters can access the concession without any operational hurdles,” an official said. The fare relief initiative forms part of a broader push to make Mumbai’s growing metro network more equitable for commuters who rely heavily on public transport for daily travel. Urban mobility experts note that rising transportation costs often disproportionately affect differently-abled citizens, who may have limited access to flexible travel options.
