Mumbai Metro 4 Reaches Major Milestone With 48 Metre Steel Span Installation Nears 85 Percent Completion

Mumbai’s Metro Line 4 project, connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavli, has achieved a significant construction milestone with the successful installation of a massive 48-meter-long steel span at Kapurbawadi Junction near Majiwada. This crucial engineering feat, performed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), involved placing a 325-tonne structure over Thane’s busy Ghodbunder Road under challenging conditions, including heavy rain and ongoing traffic. The completion of this span means all special steel spans between Majiwada and Kasarvadavli are now in place, pushing the overall project to 84.5% completion.

The MMRDA confirmed the achievement via an update, highlighting the efficiency of the operation which took just two nights despite adverse weather and limited space due to nearby flyovers. The newly installed span is composed of four massive steel girders, measuring 48 meters in length and 14 meters in height. This progress keeps the Metro Line 4 project on schedule for its Phase 1 commissioning, a crucial step towards enhancing Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure. The ambitious Metro Line 4, spanning 30 elevated stations, also includes a 2.7 km extension, Line 4A, up to Gaimukh, further extending connectivity.

This development is a key part of Mumbai’s broader metro expansion, aiming to significantly reduce daily commute times for thousands of residents. The line is expected to cut travel duration by up to 75% on certain routes, providing a faster and more efficient alternative to existing congested roads. The strategic installation over Ghodbunder Road, a vital artery in Thane, demonstrates the meticulous planning and execution involved in minimizing disruption to daily traffic while advancing such a large-scale project.

The Mumbai Metro Line 4 is poised to revolutionize connectivity between Wadala and Kasarvadavli, fostering better accessibility and reducing environmental impact by encouraging public transport use. Its nearing completion marks a pivotal step towards a more integrated and efficient urban mobility network for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, benefiting countless commuters and driving further development across the eastern suburbs and Thane.
