Mumbai Metro 3 Unveils Crossover Facility At Cuffe Parade Ahead Of Inauguration

Mumbai is preparing for a major urban mobility milestone as Metro Line 3 gears up for its final inauguration on 30 September. Ahead of the launch, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation unveiled visuals of the crossover facility at Cuffe Parade station, highlighting how the underground network will soon redefine daily travel in the city’s southern districts.

Built at an estimated cost of ₹37,000 crore, Metro Line 3 represents Mumbai’s first fully underground corridor, stretching from Colaba to SEEPZ. Officials confirmed that trial runs on the Worli–Cuffe Parade section have been successfully completed, with all mandatory safety approvals secured. This final stretch will mark the completion of the 33.5-km long north–south axis that promises to transform how commuters connect between the historic southern tip of Mumbai and the business hubs of Bandra-Kurla Complex and SEEPZ. The Cuffe Parade station, located at the southern edge of the city, will act as a vital gateway, offering direct connectivity to BKC within 30–35 minutes, without the need for multiple interchanges. Experts emphasise that the high-frequency operations, with trains scheduled every three to four minutes during peak hours, will not only provide a reliable alternative to congested roads but also reduce dependency on taxis and private cars, easing traffic snarls across arterial routes.

Metro Line 3 has also revised its operational timings to further accommodate passenger demand. From 15 September, the first trains will depart from Aarey JVLR and Acharya Atre Chowk at 5:55 am, while the last service will conclude at 10:30 pm. Officials explained that these adjustments were introduced to improve efficiency and to ease the rush during early office hours, signalling the operator’s responsiveness to commuter needs. The environmental implications of the project are equally significant. By diverting lakhs of daily passengers from road to rail, Metro Line 3 is expected to cut vehicular emissions and reduce overall pollution levels in one of India’s most traffic-heavy cities. Urban planners point out that such underground infrastructure is critical for sustainable city-making, especially in a metropolis constrained by limited land and high population density.

For residents of South Mumbai, where narrow lanes and chronic congestion have long made travel arduous, the metro’s seamless integration with suburban and intercity transport promises a new phase of accessibility. Experts also underline that the project, while costly, reflects a global standard of mass transit that is designed to serve future generations. As Mumbai counts down to the formal launch, anticipation is high that Metro Line 3 will not only redefine commutes but also signal a shift towards cleaner, more equitable, and more efficient urban transport solutions.
