Mumbai’s metro network has come under scrutiny after corrosion was detected on the roofs of trains operating on Line 2A, raising early concerns about maintenance practices in the city’s rapidly expanding transit system. The issue was identified on trains running between Dahisar and Andheri West, which have been in service for just three and a half years, prompting the operator to initiate anti-rust treatments to safeguard both equipment and commuter confidence.
The maintenance work is being overseen by MMRC Operations & Maintenance Company Ltd., a subsidiary of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Officials noted that the humid coastal climate, a persistent challenge for infrastructure in Mumbai, has contributed significantly to the development of rust on the train exteriors. “The corrosion detected is primarily superficial at this stage, but preventive action is essential to maintain long-term fleet reliability,” an MMRC official stated. The affected units include rolling stock from both Metro 2A and Metro 7 lines, which share maintenance facilities under the same company. Currently, 24 trains operate across these two corridors. The issue gained wider attention after photographs highlighting the rust were shared on social media by an information-rights activist, prompting a formal response from the authorities.
Industry experts highlighted that while corrosion on new infrastructure can be alarming, Mumbai’s coastal environment and high rainfall present unique maintenance challenges that require proactive and continuous inspection. “Even with modern materials and coatings, urban transport systems in humid cities must adopt rigorous preventive maintenance schedules,” a transport infrastructure analyst commented. The MMRC has confirmed that repair work is being scheduled during non-peak hours to minimise disruption to daily commuters. A detailed inspection and study will follow to implement comprehensive, long-term protective measures, including engaging specialised contractors for full-scale anti-corrosion treatment.
Passenger safety remains unaffected, according to authorities, with no service interruptions planned.
