Mumbai Man Killed by BEST Bus on Footpath

Mumbai, – A tragic incident unfolded late Tuesday night near the Mahim bus terminal, where a man sleeping on a footpath lost his life after being run over by a Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) bus. The driver, identified as Yashwant Nangre, 56, was promptly apprehended by bystanders and subsequently arrested by police.

According to reports, the victim, whose identity remains unknown due to severe injuries, was fatally injured when his head came under the wheels of the bus. He is estimated to be between 25 to 30 years old. The incident prompted local residents to gather at the scene and alert authorities.

“The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival,” a police official stated. Yashwant Nangre faces charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 304-A for causing death by negligence, as well as rash and negligent driving under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Authorities have initiated further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading to the tragedy. The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST), responsible for managing a vast fleet of buses in Mumbai, expressed condolences over the incident and pledged cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The incident underscores the critical importance of pedestrian safety and adherence to traffic regulations, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai, where footpaths often serve as a refuge for homeless individuals.
