Mumbai Locals to Feature Oxygen Enhancement System, Easing Commuter Woes

In a significant move to improve the daily commuting experience for millions of Mumbaikars, the Indian Railways has announced plans to introduce oxygen enhancement systems in Mumbai’s local trains. This innovative step aims to combat the adverse health effects caused by extreme overcrowding, a longstanding issue in the city’s suburban rail network.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, in a recent virtual address, unveiled the initiative, confirming that the design phase for new train rakes equipped with this advanced system is already underway. Drawing inspiration from the Vande Bharat Express, these upgraded local trains will feature state-of-the-art oxygen regulation technology to ensure improved air quality inside the coaches. Mumbai’s suburban rail system, often referred to as the city’s lifeline, carries an astonishing 75 to 80 lakh passengers daily across the Central and Western Railway lines. Overcrowding during peak hours leads to dangerously packed coaches, with commuters sometimes forced to hang precariously from train doors. This congestion significantly reduces oxygen levels inside the compartments, contributing to breathing difficulties and other health concerns.

Vaishnav highlighted that the oxygen enhancement system, similar to the one used in Vande Bharat trains, will maintain optimal oxygen levels, providing a safer and more comfortable environment for passengers. In addition to this upgrade, the Railways is also focused on revamping several key stations across Mumbai to better manage the ever-increasing passenger load. Furthermore, the city’s suburban network currently operates 3,032 local train services daily, with plans to increase this number by 10% in the near future. This expansion aims to alleviate overcrowding, reduce travel-related risks, and enhance overall commuter convenience. This initiative marks a transformative step in Mumbai’s public transport landscape, prioritising passenger safety, health, and comfort amidst the relentless hustle of the city’s daily grind.
