The Western Railway has introduced real-time external digital display systems on its suburban local trains.
The new Full HD side-mounted panels mark a technological first for Mumbai’s local train network and promise to streamline the commuting experience with clear, accessible train information. The digital display units, currently installed on one 12-car rake, are mounted on the outer sides of the motorcoaches—four screens on each side—allowing passengers standing on platforms to instantly view train details. The Mumbai Division of Western Railway plans to install these systems on 10 more rakes in the next phase, with eventual coverage across the fleet. Priced at approximately ₹14 lakh per rake, the display systems are fully integrated with the onboard software. Once the guard inputs the train number before departure, the panels automatically update with accurate route information. The display cycles every three seconds and includes train number, destination, and service type (slow or fast) in English, Hindi, and Marathi. Officials said the screens are Full HD TFT units protected by toughened glass and reinforced with a 5 mm polycarbonate sheet. Designed for Mumbai’s high-traffic, high-dust rail environment, the displays feature a brightness level of 700 cd/m², ensuring visibility from up to five metres. Smart sensors adjust screen contrast for optimal readability under varying lighting conditions. Mounting of the displays has been achieved using specially developed in-house brackets and a fail-safe split pin locking mechanism to ensure durability and safety during train operations.
“This is a pioneering initiative by the Mumbai Central EMU Carshed aimed at reducing commuter confusion and enhancing overall journey experience,” said a senior Western Railway official. “By offering dynamic and multilingual updates directly on the train’s exterior, we’re bridging an important information gap for passengers who rely on visual cues more than station announcements.” For years, suburban passengers have depended on station announcements and occasional static signage for train details. With the implementation of this digital system, Western Railway is positioning itself as a leader in commuter-centric innovation across the country’s busiest rail network. The real-time display feature is also expected to reduce last-minute rushes and platform confusion, particularly during peak hours, thereby improving crowd management and operational efficiency.
As this project expands, authorities believe it could serve as a model for similar upgrades across other Indian Railways zones aiming to modernise their suburban systems and prioritise the commuter experience.
