IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has entered a new phase of international expansion with the launch of direct flight services between Mumbai and London and Kolkata and Guangzhou, signalling its ambitions to strengthen global connectivity and compete with leading full-service carriers on long-haul routes.
The airline’s first non-stop Mumbai–London flight marks a decisive shift from its traditional short-haul focus, targeting a growing market of business and leisure travellers seeking efficient, direct international routes. Simultaneously, the Kolkata–Guangzhou connection restores air travel between India and China after a five-year gap, following a suspension of routes in 2020 amid the pandemic and geopolitical tensions.Strategic Leap Towards Long-Haul Markets
According to senior airline officials, these new routes form part of IndiGo’s long-term plan to tap into the premium travel segment and establish a foothold in major international aviation corridors. Fleet Expansion and Long-Term Vision In a strategic move that underscores its ambitions, IndiGo has announced plans to acquire 30 Airbus A350 aircraft. This marks a pivotal moment for the carrier, which has long relied on narrow-body jets for domestic and short-haul international operations.
