Mumbai commuters may soon breathe easier as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advances plans for a 4.2-kilometre flyover along the heavily congested LBS Marg. Stretching from Kalpana Talkies in Kurla West to Pankhe Shah Baba Dargah in Ghatkopar West, the proposed infrastructure aims to significantly reduce daily bottlenecks at Shreyas junction, the Sarvodaya Hospital junction, and near the BMC yard on Sant Narsi Mehta Road.
LBS Marg is a critical artery in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, notorious for traffic snarls that ripple across adjacent corridors. According to civic experts, key pinch points include the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, Ghatkopar Station Road, and the Sant Narsi Mehta Road junction. The anticipated flyover is designed as a four-lane, two-way structure to bypass these high-congestion nodes, promising a more fluid commute for thousands of motorists. The BMC has commissioned the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) to develop detailed engineering designs and construction methodologies. With ongoing projects along LBS Marg — including the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation’s overbridge connecting Ghatkopar East and West, and Metro line construction near Sarvodaya Hospital — the new flyover will be constructed above the Metro corridor, representing an integrated multi-level urban infrastructure approach.
Urban planners and transport officials have highlighted the potential impact on reducing spillover traffic along the Eastern Express Highway. Experts note that congestion near landmarks such as Phoenix Marketcity mall, Kurla Depot, and Shreyas signal often diverts vehicles onto the highway, amplifying delays. The flyover is expected to absorb a significant portion of local traffic, offering relief to commuters while enhancing connectivity across the city’s eastern suburbs. City transport analysts also emphasise the project’s role in promoting sustainable mobility. By reducing idling times and stop-and-go traffic, the flyover could contribute to lower vehicular emissions, aligning with Mumbai’s broader urban sustainability goals. Officials have indicated that the project will incorporate environmentally sensitive design elements, including noise-reduction measures and energy-efficient lighting.
Construction timelines and traffic management plans are still under review, though authorities suggest that phased implementation will minimise disruption. Traffic experts recommend that motorists continue using alternative routes during peak hours, while the BMC finalises approvals and funding mechanisms. The initiative is being hailed as a long-overdue intervention in a corridor that experiences some of the city’s worst congestion. While challenges remain in integrating multiple infrastructure projects along LBS Marg, civic officials are optimistic that the flyover will significantly improve travel efficiency and commuter experience.
