Mumbai Launches Rail-Based Door-to-Door Parcel Delivery Service
Mumbai has become the latest hub for Indian Railways’ innovative door-to-door parcel delivery service, connecting the city directly with Kolkata. This initiative, aimed at enhancing logistics efficiency, promises faster, cost-effective delivery for both individual and commercial consignments, marking a significant shift in the railways’ cargo handling strategy.
Officials explained that the new service leverages containerised transit, enabling parcel movement with approximately 7.5% lower costs and nearly 30% faster delivery compared to traditional road transport. Last-mile delivery will be facilitated by the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) in collaboration with business associates, ensuring parcels reach recipients promptly. Customers can conveniently book shipments online, expanding access beyond bulk consigners to retail users as well.
The initiative also coincides with the operationalisation of an upgraded railway goods shed in Sonik, Uttar Pradesh, now functioning as an integrated logistics hub. This facility consolidates handling, storage, and dispatch operations under a single roof, streamlining workflows and improving cargo management efficiency. Additionally, the Delhi–Kolkata route now benefits from an assured transit container train service, guaranteeing delivery within 120 hours.
According to logistics experts, this move aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting multi-modal transport networks and sustainable urban freight solutions. By shifting significant parcel traffic from road to rail, the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower traffic congestion on highways, and enhance overall efficiency in India’s logistics ecosystem.Currently, over 115 Gati Shakti cargo terminals across the Indian Railways network provide multi-modal services, facilitating integrated operations across rail, road, and port infrastructure. The Mumbai-Kolkata corridor has been prioritised for initial saturation, with plans to extend door-to-door rail parcel services to additional city pairs in the coming months.
Officials highlighted that the policy represents a strategic evolution in Indian Railways’ operations. Traditionally focused on bulk goods, the system now targets higher-value, smaller parcel consignments, effectively balancing demand aggregation with containerised movement. Experts suggest that this approach could redefine urban logistics standards, providing a scalable model for eco-friendly, time-efficient freight delivery.Industry analysts emphasised the economic and social benefits: reducing transit times directly impacts businesses dependent on timely shipments, while the environmentally friendly mode of transport contributes to India’s low-carbon urban mobility objectives.
