Mumbai Largest Metro Depot to Rise in Thane Mogarpada

Mumbai is set to witness a significant leap in its metro infrastructure with the establishment of the city’s largest integrated metro depot at Mogarpada in Thane. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially taken possession of over 174 hectares of land in the area, marking a pivotal step in the development of Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11. This depot will serve as the central hub for train maintenance, stabling, and operations across a 56-kilometre network connecting CSMT to Mira Road.

The state government has allocated the land to MMRDA at no cost, with the official “Notice to Proceed” issued on June 13, 2025. Construction is set to commence immediately, with the depot expected to streamline operations and enhance connectivity across the metro network. The project aims to optimise integration and efficiency, as recommended by the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the acquisition, highlighting the depot’s role in enhancing operational efficiency, inter-line connectivity, and commuter convenience. He emphasised that this development accelerates the state’s goal of expanding sustainable, multimodal transport infrastructure. Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde echoed these sentiments, underscoring the project’s alignment with inclusive development and sustainable growth objectives.

To ensure transparency and address concerns, extensive public consultations were held under the chairmanship of Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and the Thane District Collector in early 2025. These consultations led to the issuance of 198 offer letters to affected parties, including 167 leaseholders and 31 encroachers. A master layout has been prepared, ensuring connectivity through 18-meter-wide main roads and 12-meter-wide internal roads, with developed plots to be handed over within 36 months.

The depot’s development is a crucial step in strengthening Mumbai’s metro backbone, enabling seamless operations for the four major lines. This project reflects the government’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that transforms lives while preparing Maharashtra for the next generation of urban transit.
