Kandivali railway station in Mumbai is on the verge of a major transformation, with the redevelopment project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A programme nearing completion. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has commissioned a new 132-metre-long, 10.4-metre-wide elevated deck over Platform 1, a strategic addition designed to streamline passenger movement and alleviate congestion at one of the city’s busiest suburban hubs.
According to a senior MRVC official, the project has been executed in phases to maintain smooth train operations while ensuring commuter safety. “Despite high daily footfalls, all upgrades have been implemented without disrupting the suburban railway schedule,” the official noted. The station now features multiple modern facilities, including a 10-metre-wide foot overbridge at the southern end, providing seamless connectivity across platforms. Additional infrastructure enhancements include a 4-metre-wide skywalk linking the south ends of Platform 4 and the new foot overbridge, and a 6.75-metre-wide skywalk connecting Platforms 2 and 3. The middle foot overbridge has also been widened to improve circulation, while Platforms 1, 2, and 3 have undergone resurfacing over 1,800 square metres to enhance commuter comfort. Six new staircases have been added to facilitate vertical circulation, further improving dispersal capacity during peak hours.
Escalator and lift installations form a critical part of the redevelopment. Two new escalators—one on Platform 2 and another at the middle foot overbridge—have been commissioned, raising the total to five, with a sixth expected by December. Similarly, one lift servicing Platforms 2 and 3 has become operational, doubling the station’s lift capacity, with an additional lift underway. Construction of a 100-metre elevated deck connecting the North and Middle foot overbridges over Platform 1 is progressing swiftly. The broader MUTP-3A initiative encompasses 17 key stations across Mumbai’s Western and Central Railway lines, with upgrades including modern platforms, enhanced ticketing facilities, improved lighting, and advanced security systems. The total cost for station improvements across all 17 locations is estimated at Rs 950 crore, with the Kandivali project specifically costing Rs 65 crore.
Industry experts note that these station modernisations are not only improving commuter convenience but are also crucial for creating a sustainable and inclusive urban transit network. Wider circulation areas, accessible infrastructure, and integrated station designs are expected to support increasing passenger numbers while reducing environmental and operational strain. With the Kandivali redevelopment nearing completion, MRVC continues to set benchmarks for suburban station modernisation, reflecting a long-term vision for a commuter-friendly, resilient, and accessible Mumbai rail network.
