Mumbai is grappling with intense rainfall and gusty winds, triggering overflow at Tulsi Lake, a key water supply reservoir for the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the metropolis, warning residents to exercise caution as heavy rains are expected to persist until August 21, 2025. Several low-lying areas, including Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Andheri, Kings Circle, Malad, and Goregaon, have reported waterlogging, disrupting daily life and mobility.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged citizens to avoid venturing outdoors unless essential. The continuous rainfall is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to generate a low-pressure system in the next 12 hours. This system is likely to intensify into a depression within 24 hours, affecting not only Maharashtra but also Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Konkan, and Telangana. The overflow at Tulsi Lake began around 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, adding to mounting concerns over Mumbai’s water management amid the monsoon surge. Currently, the water levels in key reservoirs, including Modak Sagar and Vehar, are at 77.33%, with the overflow raising alarm about potential urban flooding. Experts stress that careful monitoring and pre-emptive measures are critical to prevent damage to urban infrastructure and ensure water safety.
The IMD has highlighted that the combination of heavy precipitation, high winds, and saturated grounds could trigger localized landslides, particularly in hilly and uneven areas. Vikhroli witnessed a minor landslide earlier, prompting authorities to deploy emergency response teams. Officials continue to monitor water levels, drainage channels, and the condition of roads to mitigate risks. Residents are advised to carry essential rain gear, avoid congested routes prone to flooding, and stay updated with real-time weather advisories. The persistent rainfall is likely to create challenging conditions, including reduced visibility, traffic disruptions, and intermittent power outages. Commuters are urged to plan travel strategically and prioritise safety.
