The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has secured a significant institutional loan of INR 1,500 crore from the Bank of Maharashtra.

This crucial funding marks the first financial closure under MMRDA’s ambitious INR 8,498 crore Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project, specifically targeting the comprehensive redevelopment of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar. The initiative signals MMRDA’s direct involvement in a slum redevelopment programme of unparalleled magnitude, setting a new benchmark for inclusive and sustainable urban transformation in the region. The project, spearheaded under the strategic guidance of Maharashtra’s Hon’ble Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also chairs MMRDA, aims to transform one of Mumbai’s oldest and most densely populated informal settlements into a well-planned, dignified residential enclave. This undertaking extends beyond merely providing shelter; it embodies a profound commitment to enhancing the quality of life for thousands of citizens who have long awaited comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and improved living conditions. MMRDA has meticulously structured a diversified funding model to ensure the project’s long-term financial viability. Out of the total estimated project cost of INR 8,498 crore, a substantial INR 3,916 crore is earmarked for mobilisation through institutional loans. The recently finalised INR 1,500 crore agreement with the Bank of Maharashtra represents the crucial first instalment in this structured financing approach, paving the way for the expeditious commencement of Phase 1. This strategic fiscal approach underscores MMRDA’s readiness to deliver on its urban development commitments with transparency and speed, leveraging a blend of public and private financial streams. Speaking on the breakthrough, Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis underscored the project’s symbolic significance, declaring it a manifestation of the government’s mission to forge a Mumbai where every citizen enjoys equal opportunity, dignity, and security. He emphasised that by addressing long-standing redevelopment challenges through a sustainable financial model, the administration is ensuring timely and accountable delivery of such large-scale initiatives. Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Shri Eknath Shinde echoed this vision, noting that the loan approval firmly endorses the administration’s shared goal to uplift communities and bring overdue transformation to thousands of families, providing improved housing and stronger community foundations.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, highlighted that the redevelopment transcends mere infrastructure upgrades; it is envisioned as a foundational framework for inclusive and sustainable urban growth. He detailed the innovative funding structure, with 46% sourced via institutional loans and 39% from internal revenue streams, designed to balance fiscal discipline with profound public welfare objectives. Dr. Mukherjee further articulated that the Ramabai Nagar redevelopment is poised to serve as a pivotal benchmark for future SRA endeavours across the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region, setting a precedent for holistic and community-centric urban planning. This high-level backing from Maharashtra’s political leadership, coupled with a sharp focus on community upliftment, strongly underlines a growing emphasis on integrated urban renewal. As civic infrastructure development increasingly converges with social equity imperatives, this project is set to not only reshape the physical landscape of these neighbourhoods but also fundamentally alter the broader approach to redevelopment across the Mumbai region.
