Mumbai Flyover Nears Completion To Ease Andheri Powai Travel

Mumbai’s urban transport landscape is poised for a significant upgrade as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) advances work on a vital double-decker flyover connecting Andheri and Powai. Designed to ease congestion on the heavily trafficked Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), this infrastructure initiative is expected to transform east-west connectivity and reduce travel times, marking a key step in Mumbai’s broader sustainable mobility ambitions.

The 5.08-kilometre flyover runs from New Link Road near Infinity Mall in Andheri West to Poonam Nagar on JVLR. Initially launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to address traffic woes between Andheri West and Jogeshwari East, the project was transferred to MMRDA to better synchronise construction with the adjacent Metro Line 6, which runs along the same corridor. While BMC completed approximately 0.93 kilometres of the route, MMRDA is overseeing the remaining construction in two phases.

The project’s centerpiece is a 2.58-kilometre double-decker flyover, which accommodates road traffic on the lower level and the elevated Metro Line 6 above. This section is being executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on a deposit basis and is approximately 80 percent complete, with an investment of ₹304 crore. The remaining 1.55 kilometres, consisting of single-level flyovers, approach ramps, and a notable 120-metre cable-stayed bridge spanning the Western Express Highway and Metro Line 7, is managed by J Kumar Infraprojects. This phase has reached around 39 percent completion, costing ₹378.7 crore excluding GST.

Construction activities are being carried out amid complex challenges, including heavy daily traffic on JVLR, necessitating restricted working hours to maintain vehicle flow. Coordination with Metro operations, especially near the operational Metro Line 7, adds another layer of logistical complexity. Additionally, encroachment clearances at Veera Desai Junction and Pratap Nagar, alongside the management of uncharted underground utilities, have posed further hurdles. To minimise disruption and accelerate commuter benefits, MMRDA plans phased commissioning. The first phase, covering roughly 2.4 kilometres from Infinity Mall to the JVLR junction (inclusive of BMC’s completed section), is targeted for completion by December 2025. The second phase, centred around the cable-stayed bridge, is expected to be operational by June 2026, factoring in the need for night-time work and metro power outages.

Once operational, the flyover will provide direct, signal-free connectivity between Andheri and Powai, significantly decongesting JVLR and the Western Express Highway. This will not only reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters but also contribute to lowering fuel consumption and vehicular emissions, aligning with Mumbai’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly urban transport solutions. This flyover is a cornerstone project under the “Mumbai in Minutes” initiative, reflecting MMRDA’s drive to create an integrated, efficient, and equitable transport network. By easing traffic bottlenecks and improving east-west corridor access, the project supports economic growth, environmental sustainability, and enhanced quality of life for Mumbai’s residents.

As Mumbai continues to expand its urban infrastructure, projects like this double-decker flyover are essential to managing the city’s burgeoning population and transport demands. Its completion will mark a transformative moment in Mumbai’s pursuit of a future-ready metropolitan region prioritising connectivity, sustainability, and commuter convenience.
