Mumbai Fishermen To Receive Up To 44% Electricity Tariff Concession For Sustainability

In a landmark decision that recognises the fishing industry as a vital part of Maharashtra’s rural economy, the state government has extended electricity tariff concessions to fishermen, fish farmers, and traders—bringing them on par with the agricultural sector. The initiative offers up to 44% reduction in electricity tariffs, easing operational costs for thousands dependent on the coastal economy.

According to officials, this policy shift follows the government’s recognition of fisheries as an equivalent to agriculture, acknowledging the industry’s role in food security, employment generation, and coastal sustainability. The decision, formalised through a government resolution issued by the fisheries department, ensures that fishing-related businesses and allied operations receive the same tariff rates as those applicable to agricultural consumers. The move is expected to significantly benefit small and medium-scale fishing enterprises, many of which have struggled with high power costs linked to cold storage, breeding ponds, and ice plants. Experts note that such relief measures are critical for stabilising marine livelihoods amid fluctuating fish yields and the growing impact of climate change on coastal waters.

Under the scheme, beneficiaries including fishermen, fish breeders, traders, and fish seed cultivators can apply for the concession through their district fisheries office. Registration under the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) is mandatory to avail the subsidy. Officials clarified that expired or inactive projects will not be eligible for benefits, and any misuse of concessional power will attract recovery of the discount along with penal interest. District-level coordination will be jointly managed by the Assistant Commissioner (Fisheries) and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). These authorities will oversee application verification, monitor energy usage, and ensure that all eligible projects receive the concession promptly. Data from each district will be compiled by the fisheries department and submitted to MSEDCL for further action.

Energy experts have hailed the decision as a sustainable intervention that not only supports fisherfolk but also promotes efficient and responsible energy use in the blue economy. By aligning the fisheries sector with agricultural tariff benefits, the state is also moving toward a more inclusive model of economic growth—one that recognises the interdependence between land-based and marine livelihoods. As coastal ecosystems face mounting stress from overfishing and rising sea temperatures, policies that ease operational burdens while promoting sustainable resource management are increasingly seen as essential. The state’s move could serve as a model for other coastal regions to integrate economic resilience with ecological stewardship in their development frameworks.
