Mumbai Fire Brigade Launches Mobile Campaign Educating Citizens On Fire Safety Measures

Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) has launched a citywide fire safety awareness campaign, utilising a specially designed mobile unit to reach citizens directly. The initiative aims to enhance public knowledge on fire prevention, emergency response, and safe evacuation practices, reinforcing the city’s preparedness for potential disasters.

The MFB, handling approximately 4,500–5,000 fire cases annually, identifies electrical short circuits and LPG cylinder mishaps as leading causes of incidents, with faulty wiring contributing to nearly 60 per cent of emergencies. “Direct engagement with citizens is vital to cultivate fire-conscious behaviour in densely populated urban centres,” said an official, emphasising the importance of community participation in risk reduction. The mobile fire safety vehicle will visit a diverse range of locations, including schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, industrial units, and residential neighbourhoods. Residents will be guided on the correct use of fire extinguishers, understanding building fire systems such as alarms, sprinklers, hydrants, and emergency exits, and executing safe evacuation procedures. This approach transforms traditional awareness campaigns into interactive learning experiences.

Following the recent tragic fire in Goa, the MFB has also implemented a targeted inspection drive across commercial establishments, hotels, and residential buildings from December 22 to 28. The civic body has stressed that violations of fire safety norms will incur action under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. Industry experts note that such proactive inspections are crucial in preventing major disasters, especially during high-traffic periods like the festive season. Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Joshi highlighted that integrating citizen education with regulatory enforcement strengthens overall urban resilience. The campaign aligns with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) broader strategy to enforce preventive measures such as mandatory electrical audits, safety checks for LPG installations, and structured awareness programs for large-scale construction projects.

By equipping residents with knowledge and practical skills, the initiative seeks to reduce fire-related risks while fostering a culture of preparedness and collective responsibility. Officials believe that combining mobile outreach, regulatory oversight, and community engagement can significantly mitigate fire hazards in Mumbai’s complex urban environment. As the city expands and density increases, the campaign underscores the urgent need for public understanding of safety protocols and responsible building management. Authorities continue to advocate citizen participation, recognising that effective fire prevention relies not only on institutional efforts but also on individual awareness and timely action.
