Mumbai faces heavy rain with more showers expected in next 24 hours

Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, awoke to intense downpours on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city and surrounding districts. The advisory, in effect until August 16, warns of heavy rainfall at isolated locations, potentially disrupting mobility and increasing the risk of waterlogging.

By mid-morning, arterial zones in Wadala and parts of central Mumbai witnessed shallow water accumulation, forcing motorists to navigate cautiously. In contrast, areas around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus saw lighter showers, allowing smoother commuter movement. Officials noted that while flooding remained localised, the pace and intensity of rainfall could still strain drainage networks if showers persisted. According to the IMD, Thursday’s weather is likely to remain cloudy, with heavy showers pushing daytime temperatures down to around 30°C and evening lows hovering near 25°C. While August 15 and 16 are expected to bring more moderate rainfall, forecasters warn that conditions will intensify again by August 17, with sustained wet weather predicted through August 19.

Neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad, Pune and Ratnagiri are also under weather watch, with forecasts pointing to thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds between 30–40 kmph, and light to moderate rain. The advisory underscores the need for heightened preparedness in vulnerable low-lying areas, especially in Palghar and Raigad, where storm activity could be more pronounced. Independent weather trackers have further refined the short-term outlook, predicting that suburbs such as Borivali, Malad, Kandivali, Goregaon, Andheri, Chembur, and Kurla may receive heavy rainfall within concentrated one-hour windows. These hyperlocal bursts, while brief, can overwhelm stormwater systems, making rapid response crucial for minimising disruption.

In South Mumbai, conditions may remain comparatively drier except for occasional passing showers. However, urban planners caution that uneven rainfall distribution often complicates water management strategies, creating isolated pockets of inundation in certain wards while others remain unaffected. The city’s experience with monsoon disruptions has underscored the urgent need for sustainable drainage infrastructure that can withstand climate-accelerated rainfall patterns. Experts stress that integrated rainwater harvesting, green urban spaces for natural percolation, and decentralised stormwater systems are vital for building resilience in the face of increasingly erratic monsoon events.

With the forecast indicating a volatile week ahead, civic authorities are urging residents to remain alert, avoid non-essential travel during peak showers, and report any instances of blocked drains or fallen trees. While Mumbai’s infrastructure continues to adapt to shifting climate realities, the coming days will serve as yet another test of the city’s preparedness against the monsoon’s unpredictability.
