Mumbai Eye: The Iconic Ferris Wheel That Will Transform Mumbai’s Tourism

Mumbai is on the brink of getting its very own iconic landmark, the Mumbai Eye, a giant Ferris wheel that promises to be a major attraction in the city. Approved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its latest budget, the project is set to offer visitors breathtaking panoramic views of Mumbai’s sprawling skyline. Modeled after the famous London Eye, this monumental attraction is expected to become a significant draw for both locals and tourists alike.

Set to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the final location for the Mumbai Eye is still under discussion. However, the goal is clear: to create a world-class experience that showcases the beauty of Mumbai from an aerial perspective. With its air-conditioned, sealed capsules designed to accommodate up to 25 visitors, the Mumbai Eye is expected to be a symbol of modernity and innovation. As the wheel gently rotates, visitors will enjoy 360-degree views of the city, making it an experience that combines both awe and luxury. The Mumbai Eye project is not a new idea. Originally proposed by the Shiv Sena in 2008, the concept has faced multiple setbacks over the years. In 2022, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) planned to build the wheel at Bandra Reclamation, but local opposition and environmental concerns led to the cancellation of the proposal. However, with BMC now leading the charge, the project looks set to become a reality.

This ambitious project is more than just a Ferris wheel. It will be a defining feature of Mumbai’s skyline, elevating its status as a global tourism hub. The city, which already boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage, will gain another reason for tourists to visit and explore. The Mumbai Eye promises to join the ranks of other world-famous observation wheels, becoming an unmissable experience for anyone visiting the city. Mumbai’s tourism sector is already on a growth trajectory. In 2024, the city ranked as the second most visited destination in India by foreign tourists, contributing significantly to the national tourism figures. As the city continues to develop and modernise, additional attractions like the leopard safari at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the upcoming Navi Mumbai T1 Airport, set to begin operations in May 2025, will further enhance its appeal.

In addition to these developments, the Maharashtra government has also approved plans for upgrading several religious and historical sites across the state, with an investment of INR 1,213.44 crore. These upgrades include enhancements to the Aundha Nagnath Temple, Rajmata Saibai Memorial, and Pratapgad Fort, among others, ensuring that Maharashtra remains a prominent destination for cultural and spiritual tourism. With the revival of the Mumbai Eye project, Mumbai is poised to redefine its identity as a vibrant, modern metropolis. The city’s skyline will soon feature an iconic structure that promises to become one of its most visited attractions, adding to the growing list of reasons why tourists and locals alike flock to the Maximum City.
