The event, organized by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in partnership with the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Government of Maharashtra, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices. Union Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, graced the occasion and announced the government’s commitment to providing one-time financial support to youth-led recycling startups. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of creating a cleaner and greener planet. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the significance of cleanliness as a service and highlighted the state’s vast coastline, which offers immense potential for tourism.
He encouraged citizens to participate in the ongoing cleanliness drive, which commenced on September 17 at Girgaum Chowpatty and will continue until October 2. The beach cleanup campaign was not limited to Juhu Beach but extended to over 100 other coastal locations across India. The theme for this year’s event, “Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata,” underscored the importance of natural cleanliness and cultural responsibility in preserving marine ecosystems. The International Coastal Cleanup Day in Mumbai was a resounding success, demonstrating the commitment of citizens and government officials to environmental conservation. The event served as a powerful reminder of the need to protect our oceans and coasts for future generations.
Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari emphasized the need for sustained efforts to maintain a clean environment. He urged citizens to make coastal cleanup a year-round endeavor, emphasizing that small steps can lead to significant transformations. The governor also encouraged young people to actively participate in these initiatives, contributing to a “Clean Mumbai, Green Mumbai” and ultimately a “Clean Bharat, Green Bharat.” Union Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the importance of cleanliness and resource utilization. He emphasized that while nature provides us with abundant resources, it is our responsibility to ensure that we return the earth in a clean state. The minister also encouraged citizens to participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which aims to promote tree planting.
