Mumbai Declares Shankarrao Naram Path One-Way Till December 7 For Concreting Works

Mumbai’s traffic authorities have imposed a temporary one-way system on Shankarrao Naram Path in Worli to manage congestion during ongoing road-concreting works, restricting movement on the corridor until midnight on 7 December 2025. The decision affects a key connector in central Mumbai, where half of the 12-metre-wide stretch has been excavated for civic upgrades. The change is expected to alter peak-hour travel patterns across Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, Pandurang Budhkar Marg and adjoining neighbourhoods that rely heavily on this link for daily commuting.

Officials said the diversion was introduced after the contractor began extensive concreting and service-line realignment along the route, leaving insufficient width for two-way vehicular movement. An officer from the Mumbai Traffic Police noted that the temporary one way aims to prevent gridlock and ensure safer navigation through a zone where heavy vehicles, office commuters and cyclists converge throughout the day. The order, issued under the Motor Vehicles Act, will remain in force 24×7 until the surface stabilises and the corridor is ready to reopen. The affected stretch is particularly critical for residents and workers in Worli, Lower Parel and Prabhadevi, areas that have seen rapid commercial growth but continue to struggle with narrow streets and construction-related bottlenecks. According to urban transport experts, such temporary restrictions are likely to become more frequent as Mumbai expands its road-strengthening programme to improve long-term resilience. They argue that well-planned diversions can support smoother mobility, provided the public is informed early and signage is clear across all junctions.

To ease the transition, the traffic police have announced several alternate routes. Motorists travelling from Dr Annie Besant Road have been advised to use Pandurang Budhkar Marg via Kurne Chowk, Gopalnagar Junction, Deepak Talkies, N.M. Joshi Marg, S.L. Matkar Marg and Senapati Bapat Road. Vehicles approaching from Podar Junction must proceed to Worli Naka before turning left onto Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, while travellers using the Coastal Road or the Bandra–Worli Sea Link have been directed to take Bindu Madhav Junction towards Podar Junction and onward to Worli Naka. Transport planners say that although the temporary one way may increase travel time for some users, targeted traffic management during infrastructure upgrades is essential for building safer and future-ready streets. They note that Mumbai’s transition towards climate-resilient and inclusive mobility requires durable roads that can support buses, emergency services, bicycles and pedestrians without frequent disruption. Ensuring accessible pathways during construction is equally important, particularly for senior citizens, delivery workers and people with disabilities who rely on predictable movement patterns.

The Mumbai Traffic Police have urged motorists to follow diversion boards, reduce speed near narrowed sections and plan additional time for peak-hour travel. The city’s ongoing road improvement programme is expected to reduce long-term maintenance needs, cut emissions from stop-start congestion and support more reliable public transport operations. If the works progress as scheduled, the corridor is likely to reopen to two-way traffic shortly after 7 December, restoring normal circulation in Worli’s dense commercial precinct.
