Mumbai Coastal Road to Open 24 Hours from Friday

Mumbai’s landmark Coastal Road Project is set to shift gear this Friday, with the stretch becoming operational round the clock for the first time since its phased opening earlier this year. Officials confirmed that from Friday midnight, traffic will be permitted 24 hours a day, replacing the current 19-hour schedule from 7 am to midnight.

The move is being positioned as a significant step towards improving urban mobility and enhancing connectivity across south Mumbai. The upgraded access coincides with the inauguration of the sea-facing promenade and a series of pedestrian subways, part of the ambitious infrastructure plan to create sustainable, inclusive, and accessible public spaces. The promenade, stretching along reclaimed coastline from Napean Sea Road to Worli, will be accessible to the public from 4:30 pm on Friday. Designed to encourage non-motorised mobility and healthier lifestyles, the facility includes a dedicated cycling track, benches, and shaded areas to cater to walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Officials emphasised that the design also prioritises universal accessibility, with ramps and stair access at multiple entry points.

However, the public will initially have access to only 5.3 km of the 7.5 km promenade. Sections from Priyadarshini Park to Haji Ali and from Baroda Palace to Worli are ready, while finishing work is still underway on the remaining stretch. Likewise, out of 19 planned pedestrian subways, only four will open in this phase, as canopy installations and safety measures are yet to be completed. Access to the promenade will remain free. Pedestrians will be able to enter through four operational subways—located at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, in front of Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli. Each has been equipped to serve people with disabilities and cyclists.

Since the initial phase was unveiled in March 2024, the Mumbai Coastal Road has been rolled out in stages, balancing commuter needs with ongoing construction and landscaping work. Civic officials said parking lots and open green spaces along the reclaimed land are still under development and will be opened in subsequent phases. Urban planning experts view the Coastal Road’s expanded hours and public amenities as a significant win for sustainable city design. By promoting cycling, walking, and access to open spaces, the project aligns with broader goals of reducing vehicular congestion and creating climate-resilient coastal infrastructure. However, some have cautioned that maintenance, safety, and equitable access must remain priorities as the project transitions into full-time operation.
