Mumbai Coastal Road Set to Open Underpass and Promenade Before Monsoon

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), an ambitious infrastructure development aimed at enhancing the city’s coastal connectivity, is set to unveil two major features ahead of the monsoon season. A 550-metre vehicular underpass and a 7.5-kilometre promenade are among the latest additions to the high-speed corridor, which has been under development for several years.
The new underpass, a key feature of the project, will serve as a crucial link for vehicles travelling from Dadar and Prabhadevi to the coastal road. Located beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, it will provide motorists with a seamless route, reducing travel time and offering direct access to both southern Mumbai and the western suburbs. This underpass is the only one of its kind within the 10.58-kilometre stretch of the coastal road and will connect the Sewri-Worli connector to Marine Drive and Nariman Point.
In addition to improving traffic flow, the coastal road’s new promenade will enhance public spaces along the coastline. Spanning from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, the promenade will feature jogging tracks, green zones, and seating areas, offering residents and visitors stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Designed with accessibility in mind, it will be equipped with tactile paving to accommodate persons with disabilities. Landscaping work is currently in its final stages and is expected to be completed by the end of May.
The promenade will run parallel to the southbound carriageway, offering an eco-friendly space for the public to enjoy. With over 70 hectares of reclaimed land, the coastal road project also includes green spaces, cycling tracks, and walking paths, all designed to foster a sustainable, pedestrian-friendly environment. Moreover, a significant portion of the land will be dedicated to public use, with CSR investments from prominent companies expected to enhance its development.
As Mumbai continues to grow, these developments aim to not only ease traffic congestion but also provide much-needed recreational spaces for the city’s residents, balancing urban growth with sustainability and accessibility.
