Mumbai Coastal Road promenade set to open by mid June

Mumbai is poised to unveil one of its most ambitious public infrastructure projects yet—a 7.5-km-long promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road.

Slated to open by mid-June, the walkway will stretch from the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy. The civic body aims to redefine urban public space by offering residents a new green corridor along the Arabian Sea. The 20-metre-wide promenade is designed to cater to joggers, walkers, and cyclists, with 20 underpasses positioned at 400-metre intervals to enable seamless connectivity across the corridor. Approximately 70 percent of the area will be green, while the rest will be reserved for paved tracks, cycle lanes, benches, and other public amenities. Part of a broader vision to reclaim 70 hectares of open space along the coast, the initiative includes a 17-hectare promenade project comprising a 12-hectare walkway developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a five-hectare central section to be beautified by Tata Sons. The master plan and design were led by infrastructure consulting firm AECOM.

In a bid to ensure long-term maintenance and aesthetic enhancement, the BMC invited Expressions of Interest from private firms under Corporate Social Responsibility contributions. Reliance Industries has been selected for the next phase of development, having met all criteria without seeking reimbursement. A final masterplan, which will include parks, cycling tracks, plazas, and landscaped areas, will be submitted upon administrative approval. Key attractions in the upcoming space include a Miyawaki forest, butterfly gardens, yoga and jogging tracks, outdoor gyms, senior citizen parks, and open-air theatres. Civic officials believe the initiative could become a benchmark in coastal urban planning, supporting sustainable development while improving quality of life for city residents.

Meanwhile, both carriageways of the 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road connecting BWSL and the Princess Street Flyover are now open for vehicular traffic, further improving north-south connectivity in the city.
