Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade Enhances Urban Green Spaces

Mumbai, India’s bustling financial capital, is embarking on ambitious urban development projects that aim to transform the city into a model of sustainability, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship.

These initiatives focus on preserving green spaces, addressing waste management challenges, and redeveloping one of Asia’s largest informal settlements with a vision for a greener, more equitable future. Mumbai’s burgeoning population and rapid urbanization have led to significant waste management issues. In May 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected and processed approximately seven tonnes of sanitary and special care waste through six plasma incineration plants. This initiative, launched on April 22, aims to promote safer and more hygienic disposal of personal-use waste such as sanitary napkins and diapers. A total of 1,748 establishments, including housing societies and educational institutions, have registered for the service, with collection frequency varying across participating entities.

Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s most densely populated areas, is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment aimed at improving living conditions and fostering economic opportunities. The project will feature a cluster-based development model, reorganizing the area into compact, self-sustained neighborhoods with integrated residential, commercial, and social infrastructure. A key aspect of the redevelopment is the inclusive approach to housing. Traditionally, upper-floor tenements in slums have been deemed illegal and excluded from slum rehabilitation projects. However, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project has introduced a unique policy to include residents of upper-floor tenements, ensuring that all residents have access to modern housing with essential amenities such as private toilets and kitchens.

The project also aims to preserve Dharavi’s vibrant informal economy. With over 6,000 small and medium enterprises operating in the area, the redevelopment plan includes provisions to support these businesses and integrate them into the new urban fabric, fostering economic growth and community resilience.  Mumbai’s urban development initiatives represent a significant step towards creating a sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally conscious city. By prioritizing the preservation of green spaces, addressing waste management challenges, and adopting inclusive redevelopment strategies, Mumbai is setting a precedent for other urban centers in India and beyond. These efforts underscore the city’s commitment to building a future where urban growth harmonizes with ecological balance and social equity.
