Mumbai has moved a decisive step closer to easing chronic congestion in its eastern suburbs, with the clearance of a long-pending hurdle blocking a new arterial road in Kandivali East. The development follows the allotment of rehabilitation homes to over 120 project-affected families, unlocking a critical stretch of a proposed 120-foot-wide Development Plan road designed to improve east–west connectivity and reduce pressure on existing corridors.
The road, envisioned as a parallel connector to the Western Express Highway, is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents of Kandivali and surrounding neighbourhoods. Civic officials said the project will provide an alternative route beyond the heavily congested Akurli Road, strengthening links between Borivali, Goregaon and future transport corridors such as the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road and the upcoming Thane–Borivali twin tunnel. At the heart of the breakthrough is a long-running rehabilitation process. Families living along the proposed alignment had faced years of uncertainty, with many previously resisting relocation to environmentally unsafe zones. The latest allotments near Kandivali East station have addressed those concerns, offering permanent housing closer to livelihoods and transport access. Urban planners note that such in-situ or nearby rehabilitation models are increasingly essential for equitable infrastructure delivery in dense cities like Mumbai.
According to civic data, 194 structures were identified as eligible for rehabilitation along the planned corridor. With 167 families already resettled, authorities estimate that nearly one-third of the road’s obstructed length can now be cleared. Demolition work is expected to begin shortly after residents complete relocation formalities, with contractors already appointed for the road construction. An official involved in the project said the DP Road is strategically significant as it forms part of a larger mobility grid planned decades ago but stalled due to land acquisition and rehabilitation challenges. “This corridor has citywide relevance. Once completed, it will distribute traffic more evenly and support future mass transit integration,” the official noted.
Beyond traffic relief, the project highlights the growing intersection between transport planning and social housing policy. Urban experts say timely rehabilitation not only accelerates infrastructure projects but also prevents displacement-led inequities that have historically delayed Mumbai’s development plans. The remaining eligible families are expected to be accommodated following the upcoming civic elections, with officials indicating that the entire road could open to vehicular traffic by mid-2026. If delivered on schedule, the Kandivali DP Road may serve as a template for resolving similar bottlenecks across Mumbai—balancing connectivity, liveability and inclusive urban growth.
