The Central Railway’s Mumbai Division has launched a comprehensive ticket-checking initiative targeting first-class compartments of suburban local trains from 16 June . This intensified drive aims to address fare evasion, alleviate overcrowding, and ensure a more comfortable commute for legitimate passengers.
The operation involves special ticket-checking squads working in coordination with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. These teams will conduct thorough inspections during peak travel hours, focusing on first-class coaches to identify and penalize ticketless travellers. Passengers found without valid tickets or passes will be subjected to on-the-spot fines. Failure to pay the fine will result in the passenger being handed over to ticket-checking staff at the next station for further legal proceedings, including potential prosecution. The decision to intensify ticket checks comes in response to numerous complaints from first-class commuters regarding overcrowding and the misuse of premium compartments by unauthorised passengers.
Central Railway officials have stated that this initiative is designed to uphold the rights of fare-paying travellers who expect a less congested and more comfortable journey. By enforcing strict ticketing rules, the railway aims to deter unauthorised travel and promote a more equitable commuting experience for all passengers. This move is part of Central Railway’s broader efforts to enforce ticketing rules more strictly and improve revenue protection. In the previous financial year, the Mumbai division collected approximately ₹100 crore in fines from ticketless passengers, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s ₹60 crore. The rise in penalties reflects the railway’s commitment to combating fare evasion and ensuring that all passengers contribute fairly to the cost of services.
Central Railway has urged all suburban passengers to travel with valid tickets or passes and to fully cooperate with ticket-checking staff. By adhering to these guidelines, passengers can contribute to a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for everyone. The railway’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to maintaining the integrity of the suburban rail network and ensuring that it remains a reliable mode of transportation for all commuters.
