The closure of the iconic Bellasis bridge in Mumbai Central in June 2024 left commuters facing significant inconvenience. The bridge, a vital east-west pedestrian route across the station, was closed for reconstruction, disrupting the daily commute for thousands of passengers. To address this pressing issue, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Western Railway (WR) swiftly collaborated to construct a temporary foot-over bridge (FOB).
This innovative solution, completed in under six months, has provided much-needed connectivity between the east and west sides of the station. The temporary FOB, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Mumbai’s suburban railway history, was designed and constructed with remarkable speed and efficiency. The project involved overcoming various challenges, including land acquisition and clearing encroachments. One of the key factors contributing to the rapid construction was the use of prefabricated steel components.
The columns and girders were assembled off-site and then lifted into place using a large crane. This modular approach significantly reduced construction time. Additionally, the use of chequered plates for the decking further expedited the process. These plates provided a durable and slip-resistant surface while eliminating the need for traditional reinforced cement concrete. The electrical work for the FOB, including lighting installation, was completed in a remarkably short timeframe. The staircase was also prefabricated and installed at the station, further streamlining the construction process.
While the temporary FOB has provided a much-needed solution for commuters, there are concerns about the potential closure of a trespasser shortcut in Wadala. Residents in the area have expressed their opposition to this plan, fearing that it will disrupt their daily routine. The successful construction of the temporary FOB at Mumbai Central is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the BMC and WR. The project demonstrates the possibility of rapid infrastructure development in urban areas, even in the face of complex challenges.
