Mumbai bus fares rise with new routes

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is set to rationalise 32 bus routes and revise fare structures.

This initiative aligns with the impending launch of the second phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3, aiming to improve last-mile connectivity and address financial sustainability. According to officials, the route rationalisation encompasses the augmentation of 13 routes with 464 additional trips, diversion of six routes adding 264 trips, extension of three routes with 78 trips, and curtailment of 10 routes reducing 435 trips. This comprehensive plan totals 1,241 trips and is expected to reduce average passenger wait times by up to 15 minutes.

To support the enhanced network, BEST plans to deploy 29 additional buses on 17 routes for Phase II and 50 buses on 30 routes for Phase III of Metro Line 3. Currently, the transport body operates 45 and 84 buses, respectively, on these routes. The rationalisation aims to integrate the bus network with operational metro corridors, providing feeder services and bridging connectivity gaps. “The new operations will follow a ring-route pattern, linking metro stations with suburban rail hubs and commercial centres,” an official stated.

In tandem with route adjustments, BEST has proposed a fare revision. The minimum fare for non-AC buses is set to double from ₹5 to ₹10, and for AC buses from ₹6 to ₹12. Additionally, the fare cap of ₹20 for non-AC and ₹25 for AC buses for journeys beyond 20 km will be removed. The revised fare structure is anticipated to generate an additional ₹590 crore in annual ticketing revenue. The fare revision awaits approval from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA). Once sanctioned, the new fares will be implemented, marking the first fare hike in six years.

This strategic overhaul is part of BEST’s broader plan to enhance last-mile connectivity for the upcoming Dharavi–Cuffe Parade stretch of Metro Line 3. The initiative includes introducing 79 buses on 28 routes, connecting 17 metro stations to nearby localities. The plan is being rolled out in phases, with the first phase covering the Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk route. To facilitate seamless travel, BEST is also partnering with Google Maps, allowing commuters to view bus routes, track bus fleets, and check estimated arrival times. This integration aims to make daily travel more predictable and user-friendly.

As Mumbai continues to expand its metro network, the emphasis on sustainable and integrated transport solutions becomes paramount. BEST’s initiatives reflect a commitment to providing efficient, eco-friendly, and equitable urban mobility options for the city’s residents.
