Mumbai woke to cloudy skies and humid conditions on Tuesday as light drizzles swept across the city and its suburbs overnight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall in isolated pockets across Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, prompting a yellow alert for the two districts. Officials emphasised the need for citizens to remain cautious and carry umbrellas during the day as rainfall is expected to persist intermittently.
Civic authorities noted that while Mumbai’s weather remained relatively stable over the past week, seasonal wind patterns are likely to keep particulate matter suspended, creating a humid and slightly uncomfortable atmosphere. Temperatures across the city are expected to range from 26°C to 31°C, with high humidity amplifying the heat index. Thane district, under the IMD yellow alert, experienced overcast skies from early morning. Meteorologists predict occasional heavy spells in some localities by afternoon, with daytime temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. Navi Mumbai is expected to mirror these conditions, reflecting the broader regional weather pattern.
Palghar, meanwhile, is expected to see increased rainfall later in the day. Early morning showers combined with humid conditions have already set the stage for intermittent downpours. Forecasts indicate temperatures fluctuating between 24°C and 29°C, with localised intense showers possible in certain areas. Despite the precipitation in the northern districts, coastal regions including Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are forecast to remain largely dry with partly cloudy skies. These areas, which experienced scattered light rain last week, are expected to witness stable weather conditions with temperatures hovering between 27°C and 32°C. However, humidity is likely to make conditions feel warmer along the coast.
Officials reiterated that the yellow alert serves as a precautionary measure to reduce inconvenience and ensure public safety. Citizens are advised to monitor weather updates and avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. The authorities highlighted the need for sustainable urban planning, suggesting that improved drainage systems and eco-friendly city infrastructure are critical in managing seasonal rainfall impacts while maintaining zero-net carbon goals. As Mumbai navigates its monsoon transition into winter, urban planners and civic bodies continue to emphasise sustainable, gender-neutral, and equitable solutions to ensure safety, mobility, and environmental resilience.
