Mumbai Braces for More Rain After Record Downpour

Mumbai is bracing for another round of heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a “generally cloudy sky with heavy rain” for the city on Wednesday, 28 May.

The IMD has also issued warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated locations across Mumbai and its suburbs . This forecast follows a record-breaking rainfall event earlier this week. Between Monday and Tuesday morning, Santacruz recorded 144 mm of rain, while Colaba received 161.9 mm. As of Tuesday morning, Santacruz had logged 324 mm, and Colaba surpassed its previous May record of 279.4 mm set in 1918, marking the highest-ever monthly total for the area . The IMD’s broader regional forecast predicts “scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds” across Konkan and Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra from 27 May to 2 June.

It further noted the possibility of “isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall” in some areas of Madhya Maharashtra between 27 and 29 May, and over Konkan and Goa from 27 May to 2 June. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 27 May . In response to the earlier flooding, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has levied penalties on operators of four of the city’s ten mini pumping stations for failing to activate pumps to drain floodwater from key locations following Monday’s deluge. Operators at Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Yellow Gate, and Chunabhatti—low-lying areas known for flooding—were each fined ₹10 lakh by the civic body .

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) also faced challenges during the heavy rains. The Acharya Atre Chowk metro station, part of the newly inaugurated Aqua Line 3, experienced severe flooding due to intense and sudden rainfall, leading to the site being submerged with 11 lakh litres of water in just 90 minutes. The station remained inaccessible for a second consecutive day on Tuesday. In response to the incident, the MMRC is planning to construct a permanent protection wall to safeguard the station against future extreme weather events . As the monsoon season progresses, authorities are urging residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions due to potentially adverse weather conditions. The IMD’s new Bharat Forecasting System, launched on 26 May 2025, aims to enhance the prediction of monsoon patterns, cyclones, and other extreme weather events, with a forecast accuracy of 30% to 64% .
