Mumbai is experiencing persistent rainfall this week, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert. The downpour has resulted in waterlogging across several low-lying areas, causing traffic disruptions and inconveniencing commuters. Despite these challenges, the city’s water reservoirs remain nearly full, providing a stable water supply for residents and easing concerns over drought conditions.
According to officials, the city’s seven lakes collectively hold 14,00,219 million litres of water, which is 96.74 per cent of their total capacity. This indicates that Mumbai’s water infrastructure is well-equipped to manage the ongoing monsoon rains, ensuring both household and municipal needs are met efficiently. The weather forecast for the coming days suggests that moderate rain will continue across the city. On 29 August, skies are expected to remain mostly cloudy, with moderate rainfall throughout the day. No severe weather warnings have been issued, indicating manageable conditions for daily activities. The pattern is projected to persist through 3 September, with daily showers expected to be of normal intensity and limited disruption to city life.
Experts from the IMD highlight that the current rainfall pattern, while heavy at times, is typical of late monsoon in Mumbai. The rains play a crucial role in replenishing the city’s water bodies and supporting sustainable urban water management.
