The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a two-year contract to maintain the Waringpada stretch of Chimbai Beach in Bandra, signalling a sustained push to improve coastal hygiene in Mumbai’s western suburbs. The project, valued at ₹10 million, aims to systematically remove accumulated waste from a 1.5-kilometre stretch, ensuring safer and cleaner public spaces for residents and visitors while addressing long-standing environmental concerns.
The contract, awarded to a local waste management firm, covers a daily cleaning schedule for the beach, including collection of silt, debris, mixed garbage, and other refuse. Labourers will use a combination of 240-litre wheeled bins, dumper vehicles, and excavator-cum-loader machines to clear waste before transporting it to authorised disposal sites. The initiative represents an operational step towards integrating routine civic maintenance with broader coastal resilience measures. Local stakeholders highlight that while Chimbai Beach has seen significant improvement in cleanliness over recent years, the monsoon period continues to pose challenges as tides deposit fresh waste along the shoreline. A senior urban planner noted, “Regular cleaning contracts are essential, but continuous monitoring and seasonal planning are critical to preserve the ecological balance and maintain the aesthetic and recreational value of Mumbai’s beaches.”
Residents have also emphasised the importance of supervising heavy machinery operations during clean-ups. Civic officials have acknowledged this, indicating that work will primarily be conducted in early hours to minimise disruption and allow oversight.
