The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a major step to enhance urban mobility by floating tenders worth INR 2,200 crore for the construction of two critical bridges in Mumbai’s western suburbs. These initiatives aim to streamline connectivity, reduce congestion, and support sustainable urban transport in one of the city’s most densely populated corridors.
The first project, the Lagoon Road Bridge, will link Malad West directly with Andheri’s Lagoon Road, bypassing the existing 12-kilometre detour via Link Road, SV Road, or the Western Express Highway. The bridge is designed to originate near Infinity Mall in Malad and extend over the Poisar River and adjacent mangrove zones to Andheri Back Road, promising a significant reduction in travel times while carefully integrating environmental safeguards. The second proposed bridge will connect MDP Road to Ryan International School in Kandivali East, targeting the alleviation of chronic traffic congestion in the area. Complementing these developments, a new traffic arm will link the upcoming Coastal Road to Marve Road in Malad, further enhancing road connectivity in the region.
Officials emphasise that these bridges form part of BMC’s broader infrastructure upgrade programme, which also includes widening the Malad Marve Road between Mahakali Junction and Charkop Naka. The expansion is aimed at accommodating rising traffic demand, improving safety, and promoting smoother transit for commuters across the western suburbs. “Urban mobility is at the heart of sustainable city planning,” said a senior BMC official. “These projects are designed not just to reduce travel time but to offer reliable, safer, and greener commuting alternatives for Mumbaikars.” The official highlighted that environmental concerns, including the preservation of mangrove areas and minimisation of ecological disruption, are being incorporated into the project’s planning and design phases.
Experts note that bridging the connectivity gap between Malad and Andheri will have significant socio-economic benefits. The new infrastructure is expected to ease daily commuting for thousands, reduce vehicular emissions by cutting down traffic congestion, and improve overall access to essential commercial and educational hubs. Construction is anticipated to be a complex undertaking given the urban density, ongoing traffic, and ecological sensitivities. Authorities are leveraging advanced engineering techniques to mitigate disruption while ensuring adherence to safety and sustainability standards.
These projects reinforce Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure and integrate eco-conscious urban planning. Once completed, the new bridges are expected to contribute to equitable mobility solutions, offering commuters safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible options while enhancing the city’s overall transport network.
