Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park, steeped in political history and cherished by generations of residents, is set to undergo a major eco-centric transformation as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) moves forward with its ambitious plan to create a dense urban forest within its bounds. This green makeover reflects the city’s broader commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban development.
As part of the initiative, the civic body aims to increase the tree canopy significantly by planting numerous native species, thereby enhancing the biodiversity and ecological resilience of the area. Officials involved in the planning process said that the efforts will be carried out without compromising the park’s open spaces or historical character, which includes being a key site for sports, cultural events, and citizen gatherings. Shivaji Park, located in the heart of Dadar, spans over 28 acres and has long served as a green lung for central Mumbai. Recognised not only for its recreational value but also for its contribution to Mumbai’s sociopolitical landscape, the park is a rare example of how public spaces in densely populated cities can carry both heritage and functionality.
The upcoming greening effort, according to officials, will align with climate-resilient urban planning models. A denser tree cover will not only offer shade and reduce heat island effects but also support air purification and improved microclimatic conditions in the surrounding areas. In a city where green spaces per capita are far below global averages, such initiatives are increasingly critical. Urban planners and environmental experts view the move as an essential intervention amid mounting climate challenges. Civic officials confirmed that public consultation will remain a central part of the plan to ensure that regular park users and local communities are involved in the redesign process. The green facelift is part of a larger effort by BMC to rejuvenate urban commons across Mumbai through better landscaping, waste management systems, and energy-efficient lighting.
